WHAT IS HIV PrEP?

PrEP or Pre-exposure Prophylaxis is an effective complementary HIV prevention method that provides 99% protection when taken as prescribed. Currently, only the oral HIV PrEP pills are available in the Philippines.
When HIV enters the body, it attacks CD4 cells which are responsible for immunity and resistance to disease. PrEP contains drugs known as anti-retrovirals or ARVs that disrupt the replication of the virus, preventing the start and establishment of HIV infection.
Remember, HIV PrEP is different from the medicine used as treatment for HIV.
